WARN 65735 9.5ti Multi Mount Winch Kit Review

I bought this kit in 2006 after having moved to the Colorado Rocky Mountains. I did not order it through Amazon, I purchased it from a truck accessory dealer. I wanted the flexibility of mounting the winch on any vehicle with a 2" receiver hitch. In fact, the first couple of times I pulled my own vehicle out of a snowbank the winch was plugged into a neighbors vehicle.

The front receiver hitch for my vehicle was a couple of hundred dollars. For using on the rear of my vehicle or other vehicles, I made an extension cable with the Anderson connector (that's what the winch has) to a pair of jumper cable clamps. The cables are 25 feet long in order to reach from a rear mount position up to the battery. Warn offers a similar item but it was not long enough for my purposes. Copper is expensive and by the time I got done I had spent nearly $400 on this accessory. Last year I added the radio frequency remote control. It is a nicely built product. It makes winching yourself out much easier as you no longer have to walk back and forth managing the cable. It also lets you stand a little further away. When you have zigzagged your winch cable through snatch blocks and it looks like you have woven a spider web the size of a valley, it is comforting not to have to stand next to winch when you push the button.

The front receiver hitch on my truck holds the winch uncomfortably close to the ground. This would be just fine for temporary use, but I wanted to leave the winch on the front of the truck all the time. Using an inverted drop hitch I welded another receiver hitch up top and soon had a "winch lift kit". It is ugly, but oh well.....

The winch performs very well. Just like my trucks and trailers, I tend to overload things. The winch has been no exception. I have used it to move a 22,000 pound truck camper and trailer up snowy muddy inclines. It effortlessly pulls even pickup trucks back onto the road. This is an expensive winch, but when you are off the road in the middle of nowhere, you will be glad you didn't scrimp on your winch and the accessories to use it safely and effectively.

You should purchase some tree saver straps, a snatch block or two, and some of the other accessories. The first time you get stuck will demonstrate that the winch and the stationary object you want to attach to are simply not aligned properly. With a snatch block, you can get there from here.

I will add that you should carefully read all the directions that come with the winch. They are unforgiving when something goes wrong. And if you are using the winch to rescue yourself, you are already in a compromised situation. An injury under these circumstances is even worse. Stay focused on the fact that if the winch has enough power to move tons of vehicle attached to a tow cable, that it won't even notice that your fingers and wrist are winding onto the drum.

One other thing I will mention that applies to any manufacturers winch. These things draw alot of current. I have found that when the vehicles voltage is pulled below a certain point, that the transmission control module can go into limp mode. In the case of my vehicle, this means that only reverse and third gear will function. So when you are trying to drive up that steep incline and it seems your vehicle is lacking its usual power, this might be the reason. The problem is easily cured by turning the vehicle off and restarting it. But make sure the vehicle will restart. Even with the engine running, winching can deplete a vehicles battery.

Have fun and be safe.
