Hopefully this review will give people some ideas on ways to use zip ties in unique ways. I own one of those soft car-toppers, the big nylon bags you stuff full of camping gear and strap to the top of your car. They are a royal pain to strap down, you have to balance the distance of the straps all around, it takes repeated tries to get them tight, and then the loose ends flap around madly in the wind.

We were moving our daughter cross-country and I couldn't find all the straps, and we had to leave immediately. In desperation I tried a couple of zip ties, and sure enough they worked perfectly--and more importantly, instantly. Stick through the buckle, wrap around the car's roof rails, zip, snip off the excess. Three seconds.

The only problem was, being made to secure wires together they were also thin and flimsy and I put several on at each anchor point because I just didn't trust them.

Two thousand round-trip miles later, I was back home and pondering the solution to this. "If only somebody made a zip tie the same length and the same height, but extra wide. Let's see what Amazon has." And sure enough, here they were. Four times wider than a standard tie, easier to insert because their profile matches the rectangular buckles in the car topper, and immensely strong. Cheap enough (pennies apiece!) to not worry about discarding them at trip's end. My car topper has a little zip-up pouch inside and I stuffed several dozen of these ties inside that pouch, enough for many future trips without having to track down a bunch of straps. And they go on in seconds, and they're even black to match the roof rack bars!

I can't rate these for what they were designed to do...unless you clasify their intended use as "quick, cheap, and versatile," in which case I guess I just did: five stars. What a bargain!
