Magnesium Metal Rod, 99.95% Pure, 1 3/8" (35mm) x 4 3/8" (112mm), 6.9 oz. (193g), Turned Finish Review

I removed some black discoloration with a Dremel tool and sanded the magnesium billet with coarse sandpaper. Then I washed it off and dropped it into a glass jar with a wide mouth, filled the jar with water, and screwed the cap on. A cloud of hydrogen bubbles started swirling from the top of the billet and rose to the water's surface.

The rate of bubble formation diminished after a while. Vinegar didn't seem to work as well as sandpaper does. The bottle doesn't seem to be as gas-tight as the plastic Schweppes Tonic Water bottle that I used to use, but it's glass instead of plastic and I trust glass a lot more.

Even with regular sanding, this should easily outlast a Hydrogen Stick, and it costs a quarter as much. An occasional chelation regimen might be a good idea, to take care of any heavy metal impurities. But the main impurities in magnesium sound fairly innocuous, and in any event the billet is supposed to be 99.95% pure magnesium. Maybe I can get my old chemistry professor to put a sample through the mass spectrometer and find out for sure what's in it--but even that wouldn't guarantee anything about the next billet I buy.

I'm definitely not dispensing medical advice here. I'm only pointing out that this is a very inexpensive way to make a DIY hydrogen stick, and that mine produces zillions of bubbles when freshly sanded. I never saw anywhere near this rate of bubble formation from the genuine Hayashi Hydrogen Sticks I've used in the past.
