Peg construction traditionally involves the difficult task of driving a pin dowel into a hole that is just as tight at the top as it is at the bottom. Not only do you have to use a hammer from the very beginning, but it only gets tougher as you get deeper. The Miller dowel is inserted 75 by hand because of the relationship of the dowel shape to its pilot hole. You get better holding strength, and its easier to tap in. Another advantage of inserting the dowel through the top board is simply that there is less chance for the pilot hole to be misaligned. 1X dowels are 2-5/8" long and 3/8" at their largest diameter.

I just used these on a project and found them to be an attractive contrast to the maple. I left the ends sticking out a little so as to round them over for aesthetics but you can cut them flush if you want. They fit tightly in the hole left by the Trufit Drill Bit which is meant to be used with this product. As to the strength and longevity of them I cannot say but since I used them on a tool box which will be used frequently I would expect to know something sooner rather than later. Overall, they are easier than regular dowels and contrasting colors are attractive. The wooden mallet didn't quite do the job of pounding them in and I knew the hammer would have damaged them so I went with a deadblow hammer which worked nicely. I will update review if they fail.
